Xanadu, named for the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, is a computer and gaming program that has infused with the black mold of the cave. The group meets Donald and his assistants who reside within the mountain working on the project known as Xanadu. Harry, the bartender, then gives them directions to the Zero. Players can choose to stop and talk with Joseph, mentioning the encounter with Lula.Īt the bar, Junebug and Johnny perform their song Too Late to Love You. Although they are late already, they stop to help in hopes of gaining an audience at their performance. Junebug and Johnny drive by on a motorcycle on the way to perform at the Lower Depths bar. Ezra runs to the edge of the rain-filled parking lot and stands with Flora, watching her paper boat float away.Ĭonway and Shannon, now having the files for Lula, decide to head back to Equus Oils for directions to the Zero from Joseph, as the cave entrance from Act I located in the back yard of the Marquez Farmhouse has vanished.Ĭonway's truck stalls out next to a tree and Shannon calls a tow truck company but doesn't get help. ![]() Conway tells them not to, but they don't appear to hear him (like in Act I) and continue arguing. ![]() Shannon tells Conway about her past drug problems with Weaver's ADD medication. Emily, Ben and Bob of Limits and Demonstrations stand outside the museum, debating whether to enter. He then explains future leg care/Neurypnol side effects, telling Conway he will never be fully recovered.Ĭonway, Shannon, and Ezra are back at the Museum of Dwellings. Truman tells Conway he couldn't have been dreaming due to use of Neurypnol TM. Truman has fixed Conway's leg, which appears to have been replaced entirely by a ghostly skeletal leg, like those had by the skeleton Hard Times workers. Only Conway is able to see the phantom leg, commenting on it briefly. The dream slowly vanishes and Conway then awakens back at Dr. A woman, Cora, is coming to take her away, most likely to an assisted living center. Act 4 not only serves to frame its curtain call, but also celebrates all that's come before it.Conway sits at breakfast with Lysette on the morning before he left with the delivery to Dogwood Drive, they talk about her dead son Charlie and she displays obvious memory trouble. With a stunning, minimalist art style, Kentucky Route Zero is a story-heavy game whereby you're as much the author as you are the reader and the player. The indie renaissance, for want of a less hackneyed term, of the last several years has opened the door to games like Kentucky Route Zero-yet at the same time KRZ is a game which recaptures the text-heavy, parser-reliant classics of yesteryear. By dwelling on its specifics, its relatable vignettes, and its whimsical anecdotes and metaphors, Act 4 is perhaps the least developed of the lot as far as overarching narrative in concerned, but is nonetheless crucial to the story's progression. ![]() Sidestepping the open road, the gospel churches, the bureaucracy of the Big City, and replacing it with the Mark Twain-esque story-focussed lazy Echo river is a masterstroke which sets the stage for the series' fifth and closing act. While each game will typically wind up with similar conclusions, how you get there is what makes it interesting-something which is interminably subject to change. It's difficult to dwell on what Kentucky Route Zero does best because it's how you play it that matters. Nevertheless, my favourite game of 2016 is Kentucky Route Zero's penultimate episode-a small portion of a game which on its own makes little sense, but against what's come before it is arguably the most important.Īct 4 is perhaps the least developed of the lot as far as overarching narrative in concerned, but is nonetheless crucial to the story's progression. This year has been a questionable one for a number of reasons, yet it's been a very good 12 months for videogames. It wasn't until July of this year that Act 4 landed, and its fifth and final chapter is without a due date entirely. Of those five planned acts, developer Cardboard Computer released its first three between January 2013 and May 2014. Which feels like a strange thing to say about a game whose story isn't finished. Kentucky Route Zero is like no other game I've ever played. It turns out Kentucky Route Zero is nothing like Fullbright, The Chinese Room or Galactic Cafe's seminal works. These were (and still are) some of my favourite games, therefore I can't really tell you why it take me quite so long to join Conrad, Blue and old-timer Joseph in the forecourt of the Equus Oils station, but that it just did.
